Wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell had already been sidelined from the second Test in Wellington after suffering a hamstring injury while batting on day one in Christchurch. Mitchell Hay has been added to the squad and could make his Test debut. Also, a day after uncapped seamer Michael Rae was called up to the Test squad, Kristian Clarke, a seam-bowling allrounder from Northern Districts, was added to it. With Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke managing “return to play” protocols, New Zealand were left scrambling for last-minute replacements, with the Wellington Test set to begin on November 10.Both Rae and Clarke were pulled out of the third round of the Plunket Shield. Clarke didn’t bowl for ND in the final innings against Otago in Hamilton, with rookie James Naylor stepping in as his replacement.Clarke, 24, is uncapped in Test cricket, but was recently part of the ODI series against England as a replacement player after Henry had suffered a separate calf injury. He was also part of a New Zealand A tour to Bangladesh during the winter. Though bowling is his primary skill, Kristian is also a capable batter and had notched up his maiden century in senior cricket, against Central Districts in the one-day Ford Trophy, in October.Clarke hails from Te Awamutu, a small town in the Waikato region and played for Waikato Valley in the Hawke Cup before rising up the ranks in New Zealand cricket. 'There's more to life' – Ex-Real Madrid & Tottenham icon Gareth Bale reveals emotional reason he retired from football with 'people don't know what anyone's going through' message

Ex-Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur icon Gareth Bale has revealed the real reason why he announced his retirement from football at the age of 33. The former winger brought the curtains down on his illustrious professional career just months after Wales were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup group stage after finishing bottom with just a point from their three matches.

  • Bale took retirement at just 33

Bale started his professional journey at Southampton in 2006 after graduating from the Saints' youth system. After an impressive debut campaign at St Mary's Stadium, the wide man caught Tottenham's attention and the north London club snapped him up. He spent the next six seasons at White Hart Lane, before completing a dream move to Real Madrid for a then world-record transfer fee.

In Madrid, he won every major trophy on offer, including multiple La Liga and Champions League titles. In 2022, Bale joined MLS side LAFC where he spent a season before hanging up his boots in January 2023. His retirement announcement came in the aftermath of Wales crashing out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in the group stage.

Why did Bale took an early retirement?

In a chat with , Bale revealed how his father's ill health prompted him to quit football at just 33. He said: "I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. My dad got ill and that played a massive role in my decision. People don't know what anyone's going through at home but I soon realised there's more to life than just football. [My dad] sacrificed everything when I was younger. He took me everywhere. Without my dad and my parents, I wouldn't be where I am today."

He added: "I achieved so much in my career so playing in a World Cup was pretty much the last thing that I wanted to achieve. It didn’t go amazingly well for us, but it was the first time in 64 years. After that, I didn't feel like I had anything else left to achieve, goal-wise."

  • Is Bale really obsessed with Golf?

During his time in Madrid, Bale had once held aloft a now-infamous flag which read 'Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order' after his nation qualified for Euro 2020. The incident did draw some criticism in Spain and since the former Wales international has been closely associated with the sport, with many believing that he is obsessed with golf.

However, later in the interview, the Spurs icon cleared the air as he claimed he "never used to play golf that much" and would only pick up his clubs "once every two to three weeks" – and always "on a day off".

Did Bale have a fallout with Ronaldo

Speaking about his relationship with former Madrid team-mate and Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo, the Welshman said: "I'm not really in touch with that many [old Madrid team-mates] – a few of the Wales boys – but I always got on with everybody. I never had any problems with anyone. I never had any big arguments. Sometimes the media might say about me and Ronaldo, we never had an issue, never had an argument, never had a fight, never had anything."

Harry Kane and Bayern stars send message to Thomas Muller ahead of MLS Cup Final against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami

Harry Kane and his Bayern Munich team-mates have wished former team-mate Thomas Muller luck ahead of Vancouver Whitecaps' MLS Cup Final against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. Muller had an immediate impact at his new club after joining the MLS side this summer. He has led the team from the front and helped the Whitecaps to their first-ever MLS Cup final.

Kane and Bayern stars send message to Muller

Muller's club mates at Bayern Munich came up with a surprise for the German legend as Kane and Co. sent out good wishes for him ahead of the all-important MLS Cup final against Inter Miami on Saturday. Muller, who served Bayern Munich throughout his career, parted ways with them this summer after his contract expired. The former Germany international followed Messi's footsteps and moved to the US and signed for the Whitecaps.

In his first season in Vancouver, the 36-year-old scored nine goals in 12 matches across all competitions, including seven goals in as MLS league stage appearances. As he gears up to win his first-ever trophy with his new side, Bayern stars wished him luck. Kane said in the video message: "Congratulations on getting to the final. Wishing you the best of luck. We'll be watching Saturday evening. It'll be late here but we will make the effort for you for sure. All the best. Hope it goes well. I'll see you soon. Stars like Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano also had some words of support for Muller.

Messi, who has faced Muller on multiple occassions in the past during their stints at Barcelona and Bayern respecively, is excited to meet his old rival once again at the grandest stage. Speaking to reporters, the Herons captain said: "First of all, it is very nice that Muller has come to play in MLS and the repercussions that this represents. It’s good that this final came to be and that we can face each other again. We have already faced Vancouver, and we know what kind of team they are.

"In fact, they eliminated us in [the CONCACAF Champions Cup]. It was also a very consistent team throughout the year that finished among the top teams and competed in all competitions until the end, just as we did. And well, we know it's going to be a very, very tough game. And the addition of Muller coming to that team, makes them much better still. It brings more awareness to the game, to the team, and it will be a very, very special final, in which we hope it will be in our favour."

Inter Miami overdependent on Messi?

Muller earlier claimed that Vancouver Whitecaps are a more balanced until compared to Inter Miami as he felt that their MLS Cup final opponents were overdependent on their captain. Speaking to MLSsoccer.com, the German said: "It's not about Messi against Thomas Müller; it's Miami against the Whitecaps. Maybe they rely a little bit more on him than we do on me, because we are such a good group, you know what I mean?"

He went on to call Messi "the greatest player who played our game and is still playing our game" and added that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has brought a new audience to MLS. He added: "If more people are watching, the value also for you as a player, as an individual, also for your team and also for your franchise, is way bigger."

Where Jeremy Pena Contract Talks Stand As Astros Star Becomes Scott Boras Client

It appears the Houston Astros will have to wait to sign their rising star shortstop to a contract extension.

The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Wednesday that Jeremy Pena and the Astros were in "serious long-term contract talks" before the shortstop switched agents to Scott Boras.

Now, according to Heyman, those talks are on hold.

Pena, 27, is in the middle of a breakout season in his fourth year as the Astros' starting shortstop. In 78 games, Pena is batting .328/.380/.493 with 11 homers and 15 stolen bases. He has received the third-most All-Star votes among American League shortstops.

Pena has two more years of team control on his contract and is currently set to hit free agency after the 2027 campaign. The Astros appear motivated to get him locked down for the future, but they'll have to wait as Pena's camp pivots to Boras.

Mantri and Raghuwanshi's contrasting methods turn MP's fortunes around

Coming together at 97 for 4, a wicketkeeper promoted to open and an 18-year-old rookie took charge

Shashank Kishore14-Jun-2022Himanshu Mantri rose through the age-group circuit as a middle-order batter. When Chandrakant Pandit took over as Madhya Pradesh coach two years ago, he felt Mantri was batting two positions lower than he should. Having worked with him through the off-season, Pandit was convinced that Mantri’s technique and grit would be better utilised at the top of the order. The move up the order was a challenge, and Mantri embraced it. He had debuted in 2019-20, and played three games that season, keeping wickets and batting in the lower middle order. He wasn’t seen as a white-ball player, so he spent the 2020-21 season on the fringes of the MP team, with the Covid-19 pandemic forcing the cancellation of all domestic first-class cricket in India. Mantri was itching for opportunities to prove himself, and when Pandit offered him the opportunity to open this season, he jumped.Tuesday, the opening day of Madhya Pradesh’s Ranji Trophy semi-final against Bengal, brought validation of Pandit’s backing and Mantri’s belief. He batted through the day, calmly, unhurried by the bowlers or the circumstances around him, to construct a maiden first-class century to bail his team out of choppy waters and end the day unbeaten on 134 off 280 balls as MP moved from a precarious 97 for 4 to 271 for 6.It was particularly satisfying because only last week, he had missed out on the opportunity to make a three-figure score – he was out for 89 – against Punjab in the quarter-finals. That knock, like this one, helped set the match up for MP.The essence of Mantri’s batting is simple and old school: solidity over style and patience over flamboyance. His set-up and stance are orthodox. He leaves deliveries generously, his bat comes down in a nice, clean arc from a lovely, high backlift as he presses forward to drive, with his bat close to the body. He has a good technique against the short ball, with an ability to pick lengths early and either commit fully to the pull or to bail out of the stroke, swaying away from the line with his gloves safely out of the ball’s way. When he committed to the pull on Tuesday, Mantri ensured he almost always kept it along the ground. It wasn’t until he got to his half-century that he brought out the full-blooded pull. Overall, it was an exhibition of batting that wasn’t necessarily the most enterprising, but one full of grit. The odd occasion he was beaten by low bounce, he religiously walked up to his partner, tapped bats, tapped the spot on the pitch, took guard again, and batted on, unfazed by demons he couldn’t see on a decent batting deck.If Rajat Patidar was the box-office hero who missed out, out for 7 after coming out at No. 3, Mantri was the able assistant who won critical acclaim for his application, temperament, and execution. And he had invaluable support from an 18-year-old with whom he put together a century stand in the afternoon.File photo – Chandrakant Pandit, seen here after coaching Vidarbha to the Ranji Trophy title in 2017-18, has played a pivotal role in the development of Mantri and Raghuwanshi•PTI MP had just lost Aditya Shrivastava, their captain, to Shahbaz Ahmed with the score reading 97 for 4. Bengal, seemingly mindful of the impact Uttar Pradesh’s Saurabh Kumar had made on the same surface against Karnataka last week, played two left-arm spinners and summoned them in tandem to attack young Akshat Raghuwanshi. A wicket here and Bengal would have been right on top, but Raghuwanshi had other ideas. He is an attacking batter at the best of times. The kind of player who even Pandit, otherwise known to be a stickler for orthodox cricket, doesn’t dissuade from playing the way he likes, even if he may not always say this to the youngster in as many words. In a 20-minute spell soon after Shrivastava’s dismissal, Raghuwanshi sent the ball scurrying to the ropes repeatedly to throw the left-arm spinners off gear. One of the overs from Shahbaz went for 20. When Raghuwanshi stepped out, he lofted them cleanly. He nonchalantly flicked Pradipta Pramanik against the turn and drove with authority. He realised pushing and prodding wasn’t going to get MP anywhere. So he took the attack to the bowler. Any semblance of pressure dissipated in no time, and MP were on the march again. While sweeping, he almost always got outside the line to minimise the risk of lbw against the left-arm spinners. It was a game without half-measures.The confidence in his shot-making was remarkable when you consider this was only Raghuwanshi’s fourth first-class game. He only got the opportunity in the middle order this season because Madhya Pradesh didn’t have the services of Venkatesh Iyer, and he has responded with a century and three half-centuries. He’s only played four innings in first-class cricket, and he’s yet to be dismissed for less than 50.”I saw him in an Under-19 game two years ago,” Pandit said of Raghuwanshi. “I had just become Madhya Pradesh coach. He was 17 or something. I’d heard a lot about him but hadn’t watched him. I was also umpiring in the game. The first ball he came into bat, he got hit on the pad and it was plumb. I didn’t give him out because I wanted to watch him. He made 165.”That impressed me, and later in the selection-committee meeting we discussed his name. I told the selectors this was a good time to give him a run. The intent and courage he has shown is a great thing. I told the team the same [after the quarterfinals], that you have to learn from this 18-year-old boy.”On Tuesday, Mantri and Raghuwanshi gave viewers two different and equally valid answers to the question of how to approach an innings on a tricky surface that might become harder to bat on as the game progresses. The watching Bengal matters may have taken on a few pointers too. Over coming years, the duo will have plenty more opportunities to thwart opponents in domestic cricket.
