New Zealand captain Tim Southee and his predecessor Kane Williamson are set to play their 100th Tests together during the upcoming home series against Australia. March 8 will mark the occasion, the start of the second of two matches in the series, which follows a set of three T20Is.The 14-member Test squad also includes Daryl Mitchell who has been on the sidelines recently tending to a long-term foot injury. Scott Kuggeleijn gets a look in as well, replacing Kyle Jamieson who has picked up a back problem and is looking at a year out of the game. The NZC press release with the squad which arrived on Saturday also said, “Trent Boult, who will feature in the T20I series against Australia, was not considered for Test selection due to minimal recent red ball cricket – his last Test coming in June 2022 against England in Leeds.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Southee and Williamson grew up playing cricket alongside each other, rising up the ranks from the Under-19 levels to become their country’s second-highest wicket-taker and leading run-scorer respectively. The two of them had also played their 50th Test together, against Zimbabwe in 2016, and will join Stephen Fleming, Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor as the only other New Zealand men with 100 Tests to their name.”Their achievements at Test level speak for themselves,” head coach Gary Stead said, “And they are undoubtedly two of the greatest players to have ever worn the New Zealand Test shirt.”Southee will follow Taylor, Virat Kohli and David Warner as just the fourth player in history to have played 100 matches in each format. The first Test will begin on February 29 in Wellington and will signal the return of a vital member of this team. Mitchell has become such a dependable fixture in this Black Caps team that among those who have played 20 Tests, the only person who averages more than his 53.46 is Williamson with 55.90.”[Mitchell] is a key member of the group and has proven, with his performances over the past 12 to 18 months, how much value he adds to the Test team,” New Zealand selector Sam Wells said. “Daryl will keep focusing on his rehabilitation over the next week and will be fit and ready for the first Test in Wellington.”Kuggeleijn has been picked on the back of his performances for New Zealand A against Australia A last year, including match figures of 9-113 and an unbeaten 101 to lead the team to victory in the first four-day game. The Northern Districts seamer has continued his form in the Plunket Shield, leading the bowling charts with 22 wickets at 16 from the first four rounds. Will O’Rourke retains his place after leaving one of the more lasting first impressions – the 22-year old quick claimed the best match figures by a debutant for New Zealand when he picked up 9 for 93 against South Africa in Hamilton earlier this week.Mitchell Santner continues as the specialist spin bowling option, while recent Test double-centurion Rachin Ravindra and allrounder Glenn Phillips lending support.Meanwhile, Matt Henry and Tim Seifert have been ruled out of the T20I series. Their replacements will be Ben Sears and Will Young.Henry suffered some hip soreness following the second Test against South Africa and will undergo a short period of rest and strengthening ahead of the Test series. Seifert has been withdrawn due to a torn abductor suffered while training for Northern Districts earlier in the week.”Matt’s understandably disappointed, but a break for the T20s will ensure he’s fully fit and ready to go for the Tests against Australia later this month,” said Stead. “We’re gutted for Tim who has been a strong performer over recent series and is an important part of the squad. We’re hopeful he’ll make a swift recovery ahead of an important period of T20I cricket for the team.”New Zealand Test squad vs AustraliaTim Southee (capt), Tom Blundell, Matt Henry, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will YoungUpdated New Zealand T20I squadMitchell Santner (capt), Finn Allen, Trent Boult (games 2 & 3), Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Ben Sears, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee (game 1), Will Young

Australia-India five-Test blockbuster to start in Perth in late November

Perth Stadium has dethroned the Gabba as Australia’s preferred first Test venue with the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy to begin in Perth on November 22 this year before the series moves to Adelaide for the day-night Test, Brisbane, Melbourne for Boxing Day and Sydney for the New Year’s Test.Cricket Australia unveiled their international schedule for next summer with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the summer’s showpiece event. After Perth, the second Test will be a day-night pink-ball encounter played at Adelaide Oval from December 6-10. The third Test will be in Brisbane from December 14-18. The fourth Test will be at the MCG in the traditional Boxing Day slot on December 26 and the fifth Test will be at the SCG starting January 3.Australia has an unblemished record at Perth’s newest venue having won four out of four Tests there including the first one against India in December 2018, although India went on to claim the series. Perth did not host a Test between Australia and India in the 2020-21 series, which India also won when the final Test was held in Brisbane.Related

  • Australia need Steven Smith at No. 4. But then where will Cameron Green bat and who will open?

Peter Roach, CA’s head of scheduling, said the decision to award Perth the first Test over Brisbane was due to a range of factors with the friendly broadcast timezone for both Australian east coast audiences and India viewers being the final tipping point.”The clear advice from our national team is that there is a preference to start series strongly at venues where they’re really comfortable and Perth and Brisbane they believe are somewhat comparable in terms of the advantage they get out of that,” Roach said. “They’re the hardest and bounciest pitches in Australia. They also believe that playing day-night Tests in Adelaide is a significant advantage and the stats there are pretty conclusive too.”So they will look at this schedule and some will say Gabba first would have been better than Perth. Others will say Perth then Gabba. I think that gap has really closed in recent times and the way our players think about that, and having Adelaide as the day-night Test, they’ll be really buoyed about that again. So we’re really comfortable that this gives us a great opportunity to compete with a really strong Indian team.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Outgoing WA Cricket CEO Christina Matthews is hopeful of a big crowd in Perth after disappointing attendances in recent years, although her preference was to host the pre-Christmas Test.”I would be looking at crowds of 30-35,000 on day one [for India],” Matthews told ESPNcricinfo as part of an interview to be published later this week. “Getting a space in the calendar is really important. Our preference is the last Test before Christmas. But if it’s the first Test, as we’ve had [the past two years], if we know that’s when it’s going to be then it makes it easier for everybody to plan. If we can know if it’s the first Test of every summer or the third Test every summer, that’s the important thing.”While Australia hope to maximise their advantage by starting with Perth and Adelaide, a nine-day gap has been scheduled between the first two Tests. It is understood the BCCI are keen to use that period for India’s players to get some specific pink-ball practice and options are being explored as to whether some form of match practice will be scheduled. A Prime Minister’s XI match in Canberra is on the cards but whether it is before or after the first Test remains to be seen.

BBL window, but availability issues to remain

Test players look likely to miss the BBL finals due to a tour of Sri Lanka•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

The decision to start with Perth and then the day-night Test also means there is a clear window for the BBL to begin after December 10, as those matches are played at night while the Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney Tests are played during the day. CA had to halt the BBL for five days early in the season last summer while the Perth Test between Australia and Pakistan was played in late December. Then the Adelaide Test against West Indies was a day game in mid-January before the day-night Test was held in Brisbane after the BBL had been completed. The BBL will likely start during the three-day break between the Adelaide and Brisbane Tests and will run through until Australia Day on January 26, with Australia’s Test players set to be available for a few weeks after the Sydney Test is completed on January 7.However, Australia have a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka scheduled for late January and early February which could mean some players are withdrawn from the BBL finals as there is a preference for a seven to 10-day build-up for that series to acclimatise to conditions. The dates for the Sri Lanka tour are yet to be announced. Australia’s ODI players will likely head straight to the Champions Trophy after the Sri Lanka tour, with the tournament likely to start on February 19.

Pakistan return for white-ball cricket

Australia will host Pakistan in three ODIs and three T20Is in early November before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins. The ODIs will be part of both teams’ preparation for the Champions Trophy and is likely to be Australia’s last official ODI series before that tournament begins in Pakistan. The ODI series will start at the MCG on Monday, November 4, the night before the Melbourne Cup public holiday in Victoria. The series will then move to Adelaide on November 8 and finish in Perth on November 10.The T20I series will run close to the Test series against India and will likely mean that none of Australia’s Test players will feature. There is set to be significant turnover in Australia’s T20I side by the time the November series starts following the T20 World Cup in June and Australia will likely use the series to develop younger T20I specialists for future World Cups. The final match of the series takes place in Hobart on November 18 with the first Test against India starting in Perth just four days later. There is no men’s international match in Canberra next summer although there will be a women’s T20I during the multiformat Ashes in the lead-up to a historic day-night four-day Test at the MCG between Australia and England starting on January 30, which will celebrate the 90-year anniversary of women’s Test cricket.Australia Men fixtures for 2024-25 seasonODI Series vs Pakistan

Lauren Bell: 'There's no going away from England's attacking approach'

Lauren Bell has vowed to “attack the stumps” as a default approach, both against Pakistan for the remainder of England’s T20I series, and as a means to combat Bangladesh’s slow, low wickets in this winter’s T20 World Cup, after coming through a rusty first spell at Edgbaston on Saturday to help seal her side’s 53-run win with figures of 3 for 22.Bell had not played any competitive cricket since the end of England’s tour of New Zealand in April, and she initially struggled for rhythm, serving up two wides and two boundaries in a 12-run opening over that was more runs than Pakistan had conceded in claiming England’s first four wickets of the match. But she came back strongly at the back end of the powerplay to dismiss Gull Feroza for 17, then struck again in each of her next two one-off overs to help guard against the prospect of a significant upset. Speaking on the eve of Friday’s second T20I in Northampton, Bell acknowledged that England’s performance in that first match had had its flaws, but insisted it was their execution rather than intent that had been to blame.Related

“The fact that we were 11 for 4 and still got to 160 shows the depth in our team,” Bell said. “Neither innings started the way we wanted them to start. But it just shows the depth and character of the team that we could come back and obviously we still ended up winning by 50-odd runs.”That was my first game of the summer, so I was obviously a bit nervous and maybe a little bit rusty,” she added. “I played a lot of cricket this winter, and when I came back from New Zealand, we felt my priority was to have a bit of extra rest. But there’s so much still to play, and I’m really fortunate that I play all three formats, so I can’t play every possible game.”With the squad’s attentions already turning towards the T20 World Cup in October, Bell was adamant that the players would not allow one tricky day to cramp the aggressive approach that their head coach, Jon Lewis, has spent the last two winters instilling in them.”That approach will never change, and I don’t think the messaging will ever change,” she said. “Taking the game on will always be Jon’s message and I don’t think he’ll go away from that. That that’s how we want to play and we are going to fail, probably, sometimes – but we’re not going to go away from the way we want to play.”Under Lewis’ guidance, Bell has grown into the role of England’s attack leader, a process that began in earnest during last summer’s Ashes, in which she claimed 14 wickets across all seven matches of the multi-format series, including vital spells in the series-levelling T20I leg. And even her most chastening moment of that campaign – a 26-run death over at the hands of Georgia Wareham at Southampton – has since been chalked up to experience, thanks to the faith that continues to be placed in her by the team management.”The Ashes was a bit of a blur… obviously I had one game which was a very steep learning experience,” she said. “But when I came out the back of it, I realised that I had a bit more responsibility in all three formats, and Heather [Knight] was handing me the ball in quite important times, so I guess I do take a lot of confidence from it.Bell played a key role in England’s Ashes fightback last summer•Getty Images

“When you’re backed by your captain and your coach, it’s the best feeling you can have when you go onto a cricket pitch, knowing that you have the support and the backing of everyone. Jon is really clear on what my role is, it will always be to top and tail the innings. Before he came in, I was obviously in and out of the team a lot, so I feel like it’s really pushing my game forward and giving me a lot of confidence.”Bell was forced to make a tricky decision this winter when she pulled out of her lucrative WPL deal with UP Warriorz to make herself available for the entire tour of New Zealand. But, she says, with so many options opening up for the women’s game, and with the England team in the midst of a generational change, she knows where her priorities belong for the time being.”We have so many seamers coming through, I want to keep leading this bowling attack,” she said. “I feel really fortunate that I have so much cricket on offer to me, but it’s just unrealistic to be able to play it all. I obviously wanted to go to the WPL. But my focus will be international cricket at the moment.”With the Bangladesh World Cup looming, Bell acknowledged there could have been lessons to glean from playing on the WPL’s pitches instead of more seam-friendly wickets in New Zealand, but insisted she had no regrets about foregoing the experience.”Obviously the girls who played in India, they got a chance to play against the best players in the world in subcontinental conditions, but we had a series in India before Christmas, and I went to the WPL the year before, so it’s not going to be completely new to me,” she said. “Even though we’re not there yet, that doesn’t mean that I can’t start prepping for how it’s going to be in Bangladesh, and what I really need to nail on before I get there.”And that, in essence, involves bowling straight and keeping the stumps in play – both when the World Cup begins, and in the coming games against Pakistan’s batting line-up.”The main message is just to look to take wickets, and to be really attacking,” Bell said. “[Lewis] wants our first thought to be ‘how am I going to get this player out?’ In Bangladesh, it’s going to be really important to keep the stumps in play and maybe a lot of pace-off will be the best option. So it’s about nailing our skills and working on a bit of consistency.”Definitely, our plan is to hit the stumps as much as possible,” she added. “We know against this [Pakistan] team, and when we get to Bangladesh, if we can bowl as straight as possible with any sort of lateral movement, I think we’ll be really in the game. I didn’t execute that in the powerplay [on Saturday], but it was my first game of the summer, so moving forward, we know what we need to do.”

Leicestershire declare in arrears to set up final-day intrigue

Glamorgan lead by 58 overnight, with potential to set final-day run-chase

Glamorgan take a lead of 58 with nine wickets in hand into the final day of their Vitality County Championship match against Leicestershire after the home side declared in arrears on a rain-restricted third day at the Uptonsteel County Ground.Having been 280 for five from 85 overs overnight, Leicestershire lost not out centurion Peter Handscomb in the second over after a delayed start, and then puzzled spectators by showing little inclination to chase more than one extra batting bonus point before declaring at 343 for nine in reply to Glamorgan’s 387 all out.Handscomb made 103, his second hundred of the season. Nightwatchman Scott Currie was out five short of following last week’s career-best 72 against Gloucestershire with the second first-class fifty of his career.Timm van der Gugten, in his first match of the season after injury, finished with five for 65.Glamorgan lost opener Billy Root for one and were 14 for one when a very heavy shower at around 4.30pm left parts of the playing area underwater, forcing the umpires to abandon play for the day.The morning session was limited to just eight overs after rain delayed the start until noon and then forced an early lunch, with a 10-minute stoppage along the way for some extra mopping up in parts of the field still wet from the earlier downpour.Australian Test batter Handscomb could add only one to his unbeaten 102 overnight before he was leg before to a ball from Van der Gugten that kept more than a touch low from the Bennett End.New batter Ben Cox picked up three boundaries off Zain-ul-Hassan and Leicestershire emerged from the interval needing exactly 50 to claim a third batting point and, with 17 overs left of the 110, the possibility even of going for a fourth, mindful of the value of a high-scoring draw in this summer’s points structure.Yet those 17 overs yielded just 26 runs, with scarcely a shot struck in anger by either Cox or the nightwatchman, Currie, who had proved on the second evening that he is no mug with bat in hand. Glamorgan’s bowling remained tight and tidy but the absence of aggression in Leicestershire’s approach was difficult to fathom. To make matters worse, Leicestershire then lost two wickets in the space of five deliveries as Van der Gugten executed a brilliant caught-and-bowled to remove Cox and followed it up by bowling Ben Mike off an inside-edge on to pad, the Australian-born Netherlands international celebrating the 14th first-class five-for of his career. The general sense of bafflement with what was happening then only increased.Currie, who had been joined by the injured Tom Scriven and his runner, was leg before to James Harris, and when Matt Salisbury walked out at No.11, one assumed his role was to give Scriven the chance to swing the bat, even on one leg.Yet after just eight more deliveries, only one of which Scriven actually faced, Leicestershire declared, conceding a lead of 44.Glamorgan lost Root early in the sixth over of their second innings when he was bowled by Matt Salisbury, another ball that kept low, before the heavens opened.

'Handing out imaginary cards' – La Liga president goes on another spectacular rant over 'wet dream' claim by ex-referee

La Liga president Javier Tebas has responded to a bizarre "wet dream" claim from a former referee in Spain's top-flight.

Tebas goes on yet another tiradeLaunches attack in response to ex-referee's claimsTebas accused of controlling refereesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Tebas once again proved he’s never one to back down from controversy, responding sharply to a provocative comment from a former referee who claimed it is the La Liga president's "wet dream" to control refereeing. His latest retort adds to a long list of feuds that have kept him firmly in the spotlight throughout his tenure.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Appearing on the radio program, former referee Iturralde Gonzalez was scathing in his criticism of Tebas regarding the issue of referee appointments by the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA).

"We don't just get out of one and into the other. Tebas's wet dream has always been to control refereeing," said Gonzalez. "The same Tebas who said referees had to be independent… Lie. Those who want referee independence? Lie. What they want is to control it. Being a referee is one of the professions with the least credibility, which is why what they want to do is control it.

"LaLiga pays the RFEF a fee for refereeing services, and since they pay, they believe they have the right to control it. If he could, Tebas would put a machine to referee tomorrow. He has never wanted independent refereeing. In fact, if it were up to him, they wouldn't be paid what they are. This is what we've reached because of the fight of the referees themselves. They hate refereeing and all they want is to control it. We're going from bad to worse."

WHAT JAVIER TEBAS SAID

Taking to X, Tebas posted a long tirade in response to Gonzalez's words. He said: "Iturralde has done it again!

"He says my "wet dream" is to control refereeing. What depth, what a level of debate. One would think that after so many years without a whistle, you would have reinvented yourself… but no: you’re still refereeing in your head and handing out imaginary cards to anyone who doesn’t parrot your narrative.

"For the record: my wet dream (since you’re so interested) is independent, professional refereeing, without shocks or scandals… you know, the complete opposite of what you experienced for years, or do you remember what the refereeing community itself called the "corruption index"?

"The curious thing is that those who shout the loudest about “wanting to control” are the ones who were on the inside (keeping a complicit silence) while others were truly controlling it. Sometimes the subconscious betrays you.

"You keep chasing headlines, while I’ll keep working to make Spanish football function without favors, without corruption indices, and without nostalgia for a past that some still idealize… for reasons we all know."
