Sean Williams could make himself available for selection for the second Test against Pakistan•Associated Press

Allrounder Sean Williams has reached an understanding with Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and agreed to sign a contract with the board. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Williams, who had made himself unavailable to play the first Test against Pakistan because of the ongoing payments issue, was satisfied with an offer made to him on Thursday and will commit to the country in future.Williams told sources close to the team he never planned on turning his back on Zimbabwe and that people had misunderstood his reasons for not playing the first Test. Williams was not on a central contract but a lower-grade one and reportedly had an issue with the exact amount, rather than the non-payment. He is also believed to have secured an offer in the BPL, where many of his team-mates including Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza and Elton Chigumbura already play. The rest of the Zimbabwe players are expected to receive some money before the second Test against Pakistan, as ZC seeks to prevent the threatened boycott. The newly-formed players’ union, of which Williams is a member, remained adamant it would strike if they were not paid their outstanding dues, which include July and August salaries.Though the players had said before the first Test that if, “even one of us doesn’t want to play, we will all not play,” they allowed Williams to act unilaterally because the rest of the group agreed to take ZC’s word they would be paid. The board has introduced drastic cost-cutting measures, including moving the second Test from Bulawayo to Harare, to be able to foot the bill.Williams’ availability will not guarantee him a place in the starting XI, though he was likely to have played the first match. He is a regular fixture in Zimbabwe’s limited-overs side but has only played one Test and the performance of the team in this match may make it difficult to make room for him. With all the batsmen getting starts in Harare, and Brendan Taylor likely to replace Richmond Mutambami after returning from paternity leave, Williams would have been considered in the place of one of Malcolm Waller, Sikandar Raza or Prosper Utseya. The first two batted well while Utseya had a decent return with the ball. It could give Zimbabwe a welcome selection conundrum for the second Test.

-A eliminação incomoda.

Injured Morkel out, Morris picked as replacement

Morne Morkel, the South Africa fast bowler, has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a quad strain, and will be replaced by Chris Morris

Chris Morris, who is coming off a solid showing in the IPL, will replace the injured Morne Morkel•BCCI

South Africa’s Champions Trophy hopes have suffered another setback, with Morne Morkel ruled out of the tournament with a quad strain. Allrounder Chris Morris has been announced as Morkel’s replacement and approved by the ICC’s event technical committee*. ESPNcricinfo understands that Morris will join the squad in Birmingham on Saturday.Morris is uncapped in ODIs for South Africa but played two Twenty20 internationals last season. He opens the bowling and can reach speeds into the mid 140s. He has just completed his first IPL, in which he was one of the standout players for Chennai Super Kings with 15 wickets at 26.73. He is also a handy lower-order batsman.Morkel is the fourth big-name player to become unavailable for South Africa after Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn, although there is hope Steyn will return. Morkel bowled 6.5 overs during South Africa’s opening match against India before he left the field in obvious discomfort. He was taken for an MRI scan following the team’s defeat which revealed a Grade 1 injury that is more serious than it initially looked.”There is a tear in the layer covering the muscle which means the recovery time will be longer than we thought. He will take at least three weeks to recover,” Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager who is also a medical doctor, explained. That leaves South Africa’s pace stocks severely depleted, especially as Steyn is still nursing a side strain. Steyn picked up the niggle during South Africa’s warm-up match against Pakistan at The Oval on Monday. At the time Moosajee said he would need five to seven days to recover, a period that ends in time for South Africa’s next match against Pakistan at Edgbaston. That does not mean Steyn is a guaranteed starter, though. “Dale is a work in a progress as far as recovery is concerned. We can only get him to start bowling once he is symptom free,” Moosajee said. “It’s a challenge, because if we allow him to bowl and the injury is aggravated, we will be back to square one. The physiotherapist is working hard on him and taking it day by day. It’s a wait and see thing.” More information on Steyn’s condition will be known when the squad trains on Saturday. Both Morkel and Steyn played in the IPL but Moosajee did not want to lay all the blame on that competition for the problems South Africa are experiencing. “There is a huge volume of cricket for guys who play across all formats. While I can’t blame the IPL, at the same time, there is no guarantee that the volume of cricket is not leading to this.”From a South African perspective, for both your marquee fast bowlers to be ruled out of a major tournament… I guess it could have happened at any time. Dale and Morne are our premier bowlers and we want them to play but I’d like to believe we have become a very resilient team. We’re hoping other guys have a chance to shine.”Morris was preferred over Wayne Parnell, who played four games in the IPL for Pune Warriors and has been on the fringes of the South Africa squad in recent months, and Marchant de Lange, who made a return to cricket late in the 2012-13 season after recovering from stress fractures. He also beat competition from a man former players such as Michael Vaughan and Pat Symcox are pleading for: Vernon Philander. After Tsotsobe and Kleinveldt conceded heavily against India and looked tactically out of sorts, Philander’s lengths were spoken of as being missed. However, the Test ace is not considered part of South Africa’s one-day plans. He has represented them in the fifty-overs format eight times, with his last appearance in January 2012. Philander is usually reserved for Test cricket only and injuries have also hampered his progress in the one-day format.*11.30GMT, June 7: This article has been updated after Morne Morkel’s replacement was approved by the ICC

Howard doesn't know the real me – Watson

Shane Watson challenged Australia’s team performance manager Pat Howard to research his reputation as a team man and denied he had any major problems with the captain Michael Clarke

Shane Watson challenged Australia’s team performance manager Pat Howard to research his reputation as a team man among cricketers around the country and denied he had any major problems with the captain Michael Clarke on his early return home from the India tour.Having left Chandigarh to spend time with his pregnant wife following his dumping from the team for the third Test alongside James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja, Watson declared Howard did not know him or the game well enough to make the contention that he only “sometimes” does the best thing for the team.”All I can really say is go around and ask every person I’ve ever played cricket with and that will give you the best indication of whether I’m a team man or not,” Watson said at Sydney airport. “Pat Howard doesn’t particularly know me very well. He’s come from a rugby background and hasn’t been in and around cricket very long. I think the best people to ask are the people I’ve played cricket with and they’ll be able to give their honest opinion.”As for Clarke, of whom Howard said he and Watson had to “sort their issues out”, the vice-captain insisted their relationship was strong. Watson also revealed he had spoken to Clarke immediately after landing in Australia following the airing of Howard’s comments.”The way relationships work, there’s always ups and downs like there is in marriages, friendships and everything,” Watson said of Clarke. “I’ve been playing cricket with and against Michael Clarke since I was 12. We’ve got a lot of history as people. We’re obviously quite different people in certain ways but very very similar in a lot of ways as well.”In the end, like you do in every relationship, it goes up and down and things are going really well at the moment with me and Michael. With Pat Howard, he’s only come on board the last year and a half. Myself and Michael go a little bit further back than a year and a half.”Maintaining his view that the sanctions for four players having failed to send in feedback ahead of the third Test was extremely harsh, Watson noted how many bouts of injury and rehab he had battled through to keep playing for Australia.”I, with a few other guys, took it as leading into the Test match and I got that extremely wrong, which meant that it’s cost me a Test match,” he said. “They [the leadership group] obviously thought that was the right decision for the team at this point in time. I accept that I did the wrong thing with what I did, but I will always find it very hard to accept being suspended from a Test match for my country.
”I’ve missed Test matches and games through injury throughout my career. I feel like I’ve worked my absolute bum off to have an opportunity to represent my country. When that’s taken away from you, you think the actions must be very severe. That’s where we differ on our opinions. I think it’s extremely harsh. I expressed my extreme disappointment with the punishment. But everything happens for a reason in your life.”Watson’s father has spoken of how a future without international competition may be comfortably filled by Twenty20 duty in the IPL and for other clubs, and the sometime allrounder said he would be carefully weighing up his love of the game and the hurt this suspension has caused him.”It’ll give me a chance to reflect on what’s really happened over the past couple of days and be able to absorb what’s happened and have a think about where things are at,” he said. “I absolutely love playing cricket. I love nothing more than being able to have the opportunity and privilege to represent my country. That’s something that, when it was taken away from me with this suspension – well, the guys back in India know how much it hurts me.”

Keith Bradshaw, the South Australian Cricket Association chief executive, has suffered a recurrence of the cancer he battled during his former role as CEO of the MCC in London.Currently off work due to an unrelated medical complaint, Bradshaw is set to undergo a fresh round of treatment for multiple myolema, a form of bone marrow cancer.”I am touched by the very generous comments made by so many colleagues here in Australia and overseas,” Bradshaw said. “I see this as part of the ongoing process of living with myeloma. And assisted by modern medicine, and with the love and support of my family and friends, just like last time I expect to be back bowling 20 overs uphill into the wind again in no time.”Widely respected for his capable stewardship of Lord’s and now the SACA, Bradshaw was first afflicted in 2008 and 2009 during his time at the MCC. He kept working during most of the term of his treatment, and intends to do so again this time around.Having undergone chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant Bradshaw told the London in April 2009 that the cancer had gone into remission, with the proviso that “it could come back in two months or 20 years”.Bradshaw left Lord’s in 2011 and took up the job at SACA, where he has helped oversee Adelaide Oval’s redevelopment as an AFL stadium with drop-in pitches, which will host their first Test match during the Ashes series against England in December.Friends of Bradshaw have set-up an appeal fund to aid the costs of his medical treatment. Donations can be made to the Keith Bradshaw Appeal, Wellington Hospital, Wellington Place, London NW8 9LE.
