South Africa’s Champions Trophy hopes have suffered another setback, with Morne Morkel ruled out of the tournament with a quad strain. Allrounder Chris Morris has been announced as Morkel’s replacement and approved by the ICC’s event technical committee*. ESPNcricinfo understands that Morris will join the squad in Birmingham on Saturday.Morris is uncapped in ODIs for South Africa but played two Twenty20 internationals last season. He opens the bowling and can reach speeds into the mid 140s. He has just completed his first IPL, in which he was one of the standout players for Chennai Super Kings with 15 wickets at 26.73. He is also a handy lower-order batsman.Morkel is the fourth big-name player to become unavailable for South Africa after Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn, although there is hope Steyn will return. Morkel bowled 6.5 overs during South Africa’s opening match against India before he left the field in obvious discomfort. He was taken for an MRI scan following the team’s defeat which revealed a Grade 1 injury that is more serious than it initially looked.”There is a tear in the layer covering the muscle which means the recovery time will be longer than we thought. He will take at least three weeks to recover,” Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager who is also a medical doctor, explained.That leaves South Africa’s pace stocks severely depleted, especially as Steyn is still nursing a side strain. Steyn picked up the niggle during South Africa’s warm-up match against Pakistan at The Oval on Monday. At the time Moosajee said he would need five to seven days to recover, a period that ends in time for South Africa’s next match against Pakistan at Edgbaston.That does not mean Steyn is a guaranteed starter, though. “Dale is a work in a progress as far as recovery is concerned. We can only get him to start bowling once he is symptom free,” Moosajee said. “It’s a challenge, because if we allow him to bowl and the injury is aggravated, we will be back to square one. The physiotherapist is working hard on him and taking it day by day. It’s a wait and see thing.” More information on Steyn’s condition will be known when the squad trains on Saturday.Both Morkel and Steyn played in the IPL but Moosajee did not want to lay all the blame on that competition for the problems South Africa are experiencing. “There is a huge volume of cricket for guys who play across all formats. While I can’t blame the IPL, at the same time, there is no guarantee that the volume of cricket is not leading to this.”From a South African perspective, for both your marquee fast bowlers to be ruled out of a major tournament… I guess it could have happened at any time. Dale and Morne are our premier bowlers and we want them to play but I’d like to believe we have become a very resilient team. We’re hoping other guys have a chance to shine.”Morris was preferred over Wayne Parnell, who played four games in the IPL for Pune Warriors and has been on the fringes of the South Africa squad in recent months, and Marchant de Lange, who made a return to cricket late in the 2012-13 season after recovering from stress fractures.He also beat competition from a man former players such as Michael Vaughan and Pat Symcox are pleading for: Vernon Philander. After Tsotsobe and Kleinveldt conceded heavily against India and looked tactically out of sorts, Philander’s lengths were spoken of as being missed.However, the Test ace is not considered part of South Africa’s one-day plans. Somerset have agreed terms with Indian legspinner Piyush Chawla with a view to him joining the club for the rest of the season.The BCCI have provided the requisite No Objection Certificate but Chawla has yet to gain the necessary visa. Somerset are understood to have contingency plans should the visa issue further delay Chawla’s arrival.They were hoping to have him available for the next County Championship game which starts on August 20 at Edgbaston.Somerset, who were second in the Championship in 2012, are currently up to their necks in relegation trouble. With five games left, they currently sit seventh in the Division One table, eight points ahead of Surrey, in eighth, but having played a game more.Surrey have just strengthened their squad for the rest of the season with the signing of prolific South African batsman Hashim Amla.Somerset had originally signed Pakistan left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, who played for them with success in 2012, but he was obliged to pull out of the deal when he was named in the Pakistan squad to play Zimbabwe.24-year-old Chawla played the last of his three Tests, against England in Nagpur, in December. He has previously represented Sussex in county cricket in 2009, where he took 36 wickets at 27.25.

Keith Bradshaw, the South Australian Cricket Association chief executive, has suffered a recurrence of the cancer he battled during his former role as CEO of the MCC in London.Currently off work due to an unrelated medical complaint, Bradshaw is set to undergo a fresh round of treatment for multiple myolema, a form of bone marrow cancer.”I am touched by the very generous comments made by so many colleagues here in Australia and overseas,” Bradshaw said. “I see this as part of the ongoing process of living with myeloma. And assisted by modern medicine, and with the love and support of my family and friends, just like last time I expect to be back bowling 20 overs uphill into the wind again in no time.”Widely respected for his capable stewardship of Lord’s and now the SACA, Bradshaw was first afflicted in 2008 and 2009 during his time at the MCC. He kept working during most of the term of his treatment, and intends to do so again this time around.Having undergone chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant Bradshaw told the London in April 2009 that the cancer had gone into remission, with the proviso that “it could come back in two months or 20 years”.Bradshaw left Lord’s in 2011 and took up the job at SACA, where he has helped oversee Adelaide Oval’s redevelopment as an AFL stadium with drop-in pitches, which will host their first Test match during the Ashes series against England in December.Friends of Bradshaw have set-up an appeal fund to aid the costs of his medical treatment. BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said he is unsure whether Bangladesh’s domestic one-day competition, the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, will start on time. He admitted to an underlying anxiety around the possibility of finding more names in the BPL corruption report to be submitted by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) later this month.The Dhaka Premier League has been re-scheduled to start on July 3 while its players’ transfers have been scheduled for June 23. Hassan expects to receive the ACSU report during the ICC annual conference to be held in London from June 25 to 29.Mohammad Ashraful is the only player to have confessed to his involvement in match-fixing and spot-fixing during this season’s BPL, after being questioned by the ACSU. It is still not clear whether there are any other players or officials involved, but Hassan doesn’t want to start a tournament without a clean slate.”Unless I have the ACSU report, it will be difficult for me to hold the players’ transfer,” Hassan said. “I have to look at all the sides of the matter. What would happen if there are more names in the ACSU report? I am not saying it’s there, but I pray to Allah that there are no other names. The day I heard that someone like Ashraful has confessed, the ACSU report became my topmost priority.”Hassan said that the BCB will dole out punishments independently, but will take note of ACSU’s recommendation. “They are probably investigating further from the last time I met them. It may also happen that since I am going to London to attend the ICC annual conference, they could give it to me there.”The ACSU will have a recommendation but the final decision is BCB’s. We have asked for the report, but I don’t want to hurry them. What if it becomes a major problem? Please don’t get me wrong but I don’t want to be in a situation where I have to pull players out of Premier League clubs.”Apart from the ACSU report, the BCB chief almost ruled out league for another reason – lack of available cricket grounds.”Our plan was to do it in September,” Hassan said. “We have no grounds, all of which are being worked on. The players requested me to start the league, and we have kept it. The clubs and players can give us suggestions, but the final decision lies with the BCB.”
