Drawing series massive achievement for WI – Roach

Fast bowler Kemar Roach has said he was proud he could help West Indies draw the three-Test series against Sri Lanka nil-all, which he felt was a “massive achievement” for his side

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Dec-2010Fast bowler Kemar Roach has said he was proud he could help West Indies draw the three-Test series against Sri Lanka nil-all, which he felt was a “massive achievement” for his side.”I put in the hard work and always tried to challenge the techniques of the Sri Lankan batsmen. The pitches here are very tough for fast bowling so I was really happy I came away with something to show,” Roach, the Man of the Series for his 10 wickets, said.Roach took his second career five-wicket haul during the second Test in Colombo and consistently hurried the batsmen with pace and bounce off the slow Sri Lankan pitches. He said that he adapted mentally and physically to his workload, being the side’s main fast bowler. “Test cricket is very tough. The batsmen are very high class and know how to score runs. Fitness is also a key aspect. I know once I stay fit and strong, I will always give myself a better chance of performing.”However, he said he still has a lot to learn. “I have not played cricket in all the Test-playing nations so I’m still inexperienced when it comes to world cricket. I will continue to ask questions and try to learn as much as I can. I want to take my game to higher heights.”

Celtic linked with Mohanad Jeahze transfer

Celtic are closing in on securing the SPFL title for the first time under the management of Ange Postecoglou.

After having a significant overhaul of players during the previous summer transfer window, it seems as though a behind the scenes development has emerged that could present the Hoops with the opportunity to secure another new figure to the Parkhead club this time around.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report from the Scottish Sun, Hammarby left-back Mohanad Jeahze has potentially opened the door for a move away from the Swedish club this summer amid recent links to Celtic.

When asked about a potential summer transfer exit, he said: “I can’t say much about that. I’ve always been very clear. If I am going to leave Hammarby it will be for something better than Hammarby. I love it here in Hammarby.”

Great news for Postecoglou

The full-back joined his current club back in the 2020 summer transfer window from fellow Swedish side Mjallby AIF.

Since then, the 25-year-old has made 55 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing 12 assists in the process.

This highlights just how much of a useful attacking figure he can be on the pitch, which could be why he’s on Celtic’s radar for a potential summer transfer.

Taking into account how the likes of Josip Juranovic, Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor have all provided some goal contributions for the Bhoys in the SPFL this season from the full-back positions, Jeahze could be an ideal addition to their squad.

From a defensive point of view, the left-back has made won more tackles (9) and interceptions (13) than any other player in the Hammarby squad this season.

This shows just how capable he is off the ball and as a defensive unit for his side.

Now that Jeahze has not shut the door for a potential move away from his current club in the summer, this will be great news for Postecoglou if he thinks the full-back would be an ideal signing for the Hoops.

If the opportunity to secure a deal for the Iraq international arises during the upcoming summer transfer window, the Parkhead club should do all they can to get him in their squad and ready to take on the next campaign ahead of them.

Newcastle eyeing James Ward-Prowse

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their pursuit of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse…

What’s the talk?

According to The Daily Star, the Magpies are among a number of clubs monitoring the England international ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City are also keen on the midfielder, who is said to be valued at £60m by the Saints. Pep Guardiola in particular is a huge fan of the St Mary’s academy graduate, but it remains to be seen whether or not any of the clubs will meet Southampton’s valuation.

Eddie Howe can find Solano 2.0

Magpies boss Eddie Howe can find the club’s new set-piece specialist – Nolberto Solano 2.0 – in a deal for Ward-Prowse, with Toon legend Alan Shearer previously describing the 27-year-old’s dead ball quality as “ridiculous”.

Back in 2015, talkSPORT published a list of the best free-kick takers in Premier League history and Solano came in at number five. He had a 9% conversation rate from set pieces, scoring seven of his 78 such attempts on goal in the top flight. The midfielder played 315 games for Newcastle in total, scoring 48 goals and providing 77 assists.

Meanwhile, Ward-Prowse has played 302 matches for Southampton in the top division of English football and has found the net from a free-kick a whopping 14 times. Only David Beckham (18) has scored more in the history of the Premier League, which highlights just how much of a specialist the Saints captain is from dead ball situations.

This means that the 27-year-old can be the new Solano at St James’ Park, as he has proven his quality in the Premier League throughout his career, establishing himself as one of the best free-kick takers in the history of the top flight.

It would be wrong to only mention Ward-Prowse’s set-pieces when speaking about his ability, though, as he is an excellent and combative midfielder. He has averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.31 across 33 appearances in the league this season, chipping in with nine goals and five assists whilst making 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game in the middle of the park.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports’ YouTube channel, Nathan Tella said that the Saints skipper “can do everything”. This shows that his all-round game is at a high level, as he has consistently delivered brilliant displays for Southampton throughout the campaign.

Therefore, he would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, offering Howe a reliable high-quality option in midfield who also possesses a historically superb weapon in the form of his set-pieces.

Mallya raises alarm over vulnerable 'uncapped players'

The end of the IPL’s 2011 auction has shifted the franchises’ focus to filling up their roster of uncapped Indian players, but a controversy has arisen over the rules under which those players are to be signed

Nagraj Gollapudi09-Jan-2011The end of the IPL’s 2011 auction has shifted the franchises’ focus to filling up their roster of uncapped Indian players, who will form the base of any team. The process begins on Monday but a controversy has arisen over the rules under which those players are to be signed – and a general confusion over those rules hasn’t helped matters. The issue was raised a few minutes after Sunday’s auction by Vijay Mallya, owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who said he wondered whether the BCCI could protect the uncapped – read: young – players from being the subject of a bidding war and other forms of poaching.”Now we look to sign uncapped players and try to complete our team,” Mallya said. “But I urge all the franchises and the IPL governing council to exercise the utmost vigilance while signing uncapped players.”The IPL has, as Mallya noted, laid down “strict guidelines” for the signing of these players, whose value has increased because of the general dearth of domestic talent and the need to fill squad berths. First, it has laid strictures on how these players can be signed, through a three-way agreement involving player, franchise and the IPL, and with the explicit permission of the board. It is the player’s decision, though, whether he wants to sign the contract and he is free to choose his team.It has also clearly categorised these uncapped players into three types and set wage limits for each. Those players who made their debut in the last two years will be paid Rs 10 lakhs ($22,000); those in the field for two to five years would get Rs 20 lakhs and those with more than five years’ experience Rs 30 lakhs. Those two conditions together have raised fears among the franchises – which Mallya vocalised on Sunday – that, far from protecting them from inducements, the system leaves them open to bidding wars that could violate the salary cap. More so because some of these players (see sidebar) could, in open auction, command several times the maximum they can under the BCCI’s rules. The only differentiator in a level playing field, it is feared, will be under-the-table deals.Mallya gave the example of Ravindra Jadeja, who was banned from IPL’s season 3 for attempting to negotiate a contract with a franchise on his own, and without the IPL’s knowledge. He’d been picked by Rajasthan Royals before the IPL’s first season when still an Under-19 player, and hence for a minimal sum, but sought better terms after success with the team. The most sought-after uncapped Indian players

Dhawal Kulkarni (Mumbai), Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai), Iqbal Abdulla (Mumbai), Manish Pandey (Karnataka), T Suman (Hyderabad), R Satish (Tamil Nadu), Siddarth Trivedi (Gujarat), Abhishek Jhunjhunwala (Bengal), Harmeet Singh (Punjab), Rajat Bhatia (Delhi) Pinal Shah (Baroda)

The current situation could have been avoided, the franchises feel, had the rule not been changed last month. The original plan was for domestic players who had played 75% of their teams’ matches in IPL 3 to be part of the open auction and a transparent bidding process. That rule was changed to the current one following a suggestion from Mumbai Indians. The one ray of hope is the IPL’s “catchment area” rule, which states that franchises have to sign four players from the neighbouring, or “catchment”, areas. That would lessen the bidding war for coveted players but, as one franchise official said, there was “no clarity at all” on the definition and applicability of this rule.On its part the IPL has said it will do everything possible to stop unfair dealings. “That [poaching] is a very difficult situation for us but we will be monitoring,” Chirayu Amin, chairman of the league’s governing council. “If we come to know anything was done underhand we will take stern action against them (player and franchise). I agree that it is a difficult situation but we will be very vigilant.”

West Ham: Three Hammers struggle

Aaron Cresswell, Craig Dawson and Michail Antonio all struggled as West Ham United fell to defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-final.

It wasn’t to be for the Hammers as David Moyes’ side succumbed to their Bundesliga opposition in Germany having lost the first leg 2-1 in east London a week earlier.

The Irons were still in the contest despite the damaging loss at the London Stadium, but the early dismissal of Cresswell following a VAR review was too big a blow to the West Ham hopes.

Midway through the first half, Rafael Borre opened the scoring before a frustrated Moyes was sent off having watched his side fail to break down their well-organised hosts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Albeit a spirited display throughout, we’ve taken a deep dive into the statistics and according to Sofascore, three Hammers, in particular, struggled to perform in Germany.

Cresswell 3.0/10

Perhaps a little harsh given that the experienced defender only lasted 19 minutes at the Deutsche Bank Park, however, Moyes would’ve been counting on the 32-year-old to stand up to be counted on such a momentous occasion.

Instead, Cresswell only had 22 touches, lost 2/2 of his duels and lost possession six times before being sent off.

Antonio 6.6/10

This was another below-par performance from the out of sorts striker as the 32-year-old struggled to impact the attacking prowess of the 10-men Irons, albeit with limit service at times.

Antonio lost the ball on 17 occasions, came out second best on 11 duels and only had 34 touches despite lasting 90 minutes.

Dawson 6.7/10

So often the bedrock of West Ham’s defensive solidity, the experienced Dawson lacked the required composure in a hostile atmosphere.

The 32-year-old – whose birthday it is today – lost 4/5 aerial duels, gave away the ball 12 times and misplaced ten passes as Moyes’ men were eliminated at the final hurdle before a trip to Seville.

West Indies have fire power to be successful – Gayle

Chris Gayle has said he plans to treat the 2011 World Cup as his last and believes the West Indies have the “fire power” to emerge triumphant on the subcontinent

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Feb-2011Chris Gayle has said he will treat the 2011 World Cup as his last and believes the West Indies have the “fire power” to emerge triumphant on the subcontinent.”This is my third World Cup,” he told reporters in Colombo. “I played in South Africa in 2003 and in the Caribbean four years ago. I don’t know what the future holds and I don’t want to sit back and wait for the next World Cup in four years time.”I am sure we have the team to get the job done for the people of the Caribbean. We have the fire power – the bowling combinations are good, and we have good allrounders and quality in our batting.”How far the West Indies eventually go will depend in part on the starts the explosive Gayle can provide his team. Over the course of his career, the 31-year-old has amassed 7,917 runs at an average of 39 and a strike-rate of 83.74. He also boasts 19 ODI centuries, tied with Brian Lara for the most by a West Indian.”The West Indies have a legacy of winning and I want to give my best to win matches for us,” Gayle said. “Whenever I cross that boundary rope I won’t leave anything on the field. I’m going to give it my all, give it my best shot. I am looking to try and dominate the World Cup,”The team have had a patchy lead-up go the tournament. Their five match-ODI series in Sri Lanka was first postponed due to bad weather, then shrunk to three matches, one of which was, again, rained out. They also haven’t won an ODI against a Test team since beating India in June 2009, but Gayle said they will take it one game at a time while targeting a quarter-final place as a preliminary goal.”We will look to build strength from the early stages and develop as we move along. It won’t be an easy task but it has to be done and we as players have to do it.”He expects the pitches to favour the batsmen and that the proliferation of Twenty20 cricket means most teams “are learning much better how to execute – especially in the Powerplay overs. Ultimately we will have to just wait and see what happens, and as I said before, the team which does the better job on the day will win.”

Trott gives England allround options

Jonathan Trott scored his second one-day hundred and followed that with a crucial spell of 2 for 31, which also happened to be his maiden ODI wickets

Andrew McGlashan at Adelaide Oval26-Jan-2011Jonathan Trott was delighted to become an allrounder for a day. He scored his second one-day hundred and followed that with a crucial spell of 2 for 31, which also happened to be his maiden ODI wickets, to help England to a 21-run victory that kept the series alive.Trott’s 126-ball innings set the platform from which England reached their highest total against Australia in the country, beating the 294 at Melbourne earlier this series, and took his ODI average to a heady 54.38 to go alongside his Test figure of 61.53. However, with the visitors picking just three main bowlers, his seven overs of medium pace which claimed Cameron White and David Hussey – Australia’s middle-order enforcers – ensured England never lost control of the game.”Obviously I’m in the team to get 100s,” he said. “I was very happy to do that and set up a very good total, one we felt we could defend. When called upon to bowl it is always nice to contribute as well. I know how cricket can be, it can be a nice game and it can be a horrible game sometimes.”Trott hit an unbeaten 84 in the previous game at the SCG as England limped to 214 and there was some criticism that he didn’t try to force the pace towards the end of the innings. This time he rode in the slipstream of Matt Prior’s 68 early on, then ensured the innings didn’t fall apart when three wickets fell for 22.”When we lost the three wickets it was important that we didn’t have what happened in Sydney with a progression of wickets,” he said. “It was important that I hung around. I was a little bit disappointed to get out in the manner I did towards the end with the Powerplay looming. That’s something to work on for future games with batting and setting totals or chasing them.”Trott also aims to work on his bowling to fill a valuable role in one-day and Test cricket. Paul Collingwood’s retirement from the five-day game means England will need a new part-time bowler come their next Test series and Trott wants to develop. “I’ve had a chat with David Saker and we’re going to work hard at that,” he said. “If I could bowl like Colly has in this tour then definitely I can help the side.”Michael Clarke, who would like to be able to play a similar anchor role with the bat for Australia but can’t break his form slump, praised Trott’s innings and the way his team-mates allowed him to control the innings. “I think the earlier he gets in probably the better for him and the more it suits his game and allows him to play freely,” he said. “He’s in pretty good nick and he batted really well today. I thought he held the innings together really well, the other guys had the opportunity to play around him.”Although Australia closed the innings a mere 21 runs adrift, they were struggling from the moment Shane Watson was caught behind off Ajmal Shahzad. The visitors knew that was the key wicket because of the way Watson played in Melbourne with his unbeaten 161 when Australia chased 295, but Clarke doesn’t believe the opener is carrying too much of a burden.”Obviously all the batters want to perform and do well. Watto is in a bit of a purple patch and batting really well and leading from the front,” Clarke said. “But we’ve had other guys; Brad Haddin batted really well the other night, Shaun Marsh a hundred a couple of games ago, David Hussey as well. I just think at the moment he’s batting really well, unfortunately he didn’t go on and get a big one which would have been nice tonight.”

Leeds: Jesse Marsch shares Jack Harrison update

Sky Sports have shared comments from Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch on winger Jack Harrison after he went off injured against Chelsea.

The Lowdown: Another night to forget

The Whites fell to a third successive defeat on Wednesday evening in what was another evening to forget at Elland Road.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-43/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Marsch’s side conceded after just four minutes, had another man sent off in Dan James and failed to lay a glove on Thomas Tuchel’s side throughout.

Leeds also lost Harrison in the first half through injury, and it looks as if he could be another senior player to watch on from the sidelines for the final two games of the campaign.

The Latest: Harrison ‘update’

Sky Sports shared Marsch’s post-match interview with Marsch on live TV, relaying his comments on Twitter shortly after.

They asked the Leeds manager for an ‘update’ on Harrison, where he admitted he hoped it wasn’t too bad, however, Marsch added that the winger suffered a ‘contusion’ which ‘limited him from moving’.

Reliable reporter Phil Hay stated that Harrison will have a scan on the problem on Thursday morning.

The Verdict: Bad to worse

Leeds are running out of time and players in their bid to avoid the drop. Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Adam Forshaw, Crysencio Summerville, Tyler Roberts and James are all out for the season through either injury or suspension.

So, should Harrison join that long list of absentees for the final two games, Marsch would be down to the bare bones out wide, with Raphinha also suffering an injury scare on Wednesday evening and was withdrawn late on as a precaution.

It looks as if the Whites need a miracle to avoid relegation, but hopefully, Harrison’s leg issue won’t be too serious and he can still play a part on the pitch against Brighton and Brentford.

Tahir and de Villiers star in seven-wicket win

AB de Villiers showed his pedigree with the fastest by a South African in a World Cup as South Africa chased down 223 at a canter at the Feroz Shah Kotla

The Bulletin by Liam Brickhill24-Feb-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Imran Tahir took four wickets on debut to help set up an easy seven-wicket win•Getty ImagesAB de Villiers showed his pedigree with his second World Cup hundred, his 10th in all one-day internationals, and the fastest by a South African in a World Cup as South Africa chased down 223 at a canter at the Feroz Shah Kotla, the result sealed in the 43rd over for the loss of only three wickets.De Villiers, who was named ODI Player of the Year for 2010, barely put a foot wrong in his knock, ticking along at better than a-run-a-ball from the start and sounding an ominous warning for South Africa’s opponents in this tournament. He shared in a decisive 119-run stand for the third wicket with Graeme Smith and shut down the game by adding a further 84 in JP Duminy’s company.South Africa’s batsmen built upon the good work of their bowlers as Imran Tahir had a debut to remember, picking up four wickets and striking at crucial moments to peg West Indies back on a pitch that displayed none of the demons that led to the abandonment of the last international game at this ground in December 2009.A new-look South African bowling unit kept a lid on a combustible West Indies, the spinners bowling a combined 29 overs for just 138 runs as West Indies imploded to be all out for 222 when, at one stage, 270 had seemed more likely. After the spinners had kept South Africa in control for much of the game, Dale Steyn returned at the death to ensure there would be no late fightback.South Africa were in dire need of a counterpunch when de Villiers entered at the end of the fifth over with West Indies’ new-ball bowlers in the midst of an inspired opening spell. Hashim Amla, whose 1,322 runs in the year leading up to this World Cup has made him one of the vital cogs in South Africa’s one-day line-up, and Jacques Kallis both fell to sharp catches behind the wicket as Kemar Roach bowled with real pace and, continuing the trend already being set by other teams in this competition, left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn shared the new ball with success.South Africa were 20 for 2 with that dismissal but, defying West Indies’ attempts to keep the pressure on, de Villiers appeared totally in control from the start of his innings. Threading the gap between cover and point on multiple occasions, he sprinted into the 20s at better than a-run-a-ball and South Africa were soon trundling along at well above the asking rate.West Indies desperately needed another breakthrough and the talismanic Dwayne Bravo might have been just the man to provide it but in his third over a painful knee injury put an end to his contribution to his team’s defence. Attempting to change direction mid-follow through and cut off a drive from Smith, Bravo swivelled awkwardly and immediately fell to the ground, clutching his knee. The physiotherapist was called for and Bravo was helped from the field and taken to hospital for scans. The extent of the damage will not be known until the results of those tests are in.South Africa marched confidently on in his absence, de Villiers bringing up a 54-ball fifty with a massive blow over wide long-on in the 22nd over and Smith providing steady support until he missed a straight one from Kieron Pollard and had his middle stump flattened five runs short of a half-century of his own. His departure sparked wild celebrations, and at 139 for 3 in the 29th over there was still a chance the chase could get tricky. There was barely a hint of nerves from Duminy and de Villiers, however, and after a short break for rain they eased South Africa home with minimum fuss, de Villiers reaching his ton from just 97 balls. The chase might have been rather more challenging had West Indies’ batsmen been able to make more of the solid platform laid by Darren Bravo and Dwayne Smith, who helped their team weather the early departure of Chris Gayle with a 111-run partnership. Dwayne Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul showed some fight with a 58-run stand of their own but there was precious little support from the rest of the line-up.Smart Stats

After Darren Bravo fell for 73 off 82 balls with the score on 113 for 2, West Indies lost the next eight wickets for just 89 runs.

AB de Villiers’ century is his second consecutive hundred against West Indies in World Cups after his 146 in the World Cup 2007. It is also his tenth century overall in ODIs.

In 39 matches since the beginning of 2009, de Villiers has scored 1947 runs at an average of 62.80 and strike rate of 97.88 with seven centuries and 11 fifties.

The 119-run partnership between Graeme Smith and de Villiers is the second highest for the third wicket for South Africa in World Cup matches behind the 145-run stand between Daryll Cullinan and Gary Kirsten against UAE in 1996.

Imran Tahir’s spell of 4 for 41 is the third-best by a bowler making his ODI debut in a World Cup game. The best bowling performance belongs to Canada’s Austin Codrington who picked up 5 for 27 against Kenya in 2003.

The thoroughness of South Africa’s gameplans and their willingness to utilise unorthodox tactics was in evidence first in their decision to include no less than three frontline spinners in Johan Botha, Tahir and Robin Peterson and then when, for the first time in his career, Botha opened the bowling and soon snared Gayle with an edge to slip.Bravo set the early tone with a couple of deftly glanced boundaries off Steyn and brought up a 55-ball 50 in the 16th over, his third in ODIs, and celebrating the milestone with a remarkable one-handed smite over long-on off Tahir. The century stand was brought up off 117 deliveries in the 20th over, and with West Indies starting to seize the initiative Smith turned to Botha.Again the offspinner provided the breakthrough, slipping one past an uncertain flick to pin Bravo in front of middle and dismiss him for 73 despite a slightly desperate referral from the batsman. Tahir then took centre stage, holding a a simple caught-and-bowled chance off Smith for his first international wicket and removing Ramnaresh Sarwan before he had time to settleJust as the elder Bravo and Chanderpaul were starting to flow a brainless piece of running put paid to their fightback. A reverse-sweep from Chanderpaul went straight to the man at short third man but inexplicably a run was called for and Bravo was easily run out for 40, the score 178 for 5 in the 38th over.West Indies unravelled with alarming speed thereafter, their innings sliding swiftly into mediocrity after Chanderpaul, who had upped the tempo with a couple of thumping strikes, chipped Tahir straight to Peterson at long-off. Kieron Pollard’s arrival at the crease caused an immediate ripple of excitement among a decent crowd of spectators, but Steyn returned to dismiss him for a golden duck with a skidding inswinger that struck the pad in front of middle and leg. Tahir had his fourth wicket when a wild swipe from wicketkeeper Devon Thomas ended up in JP Duminy’s hands, running back from extra cover, and the tail proved no match for Steyn’s pace and accuracy as the innings was wrapped up soon afterwards.Match Timeline

Pune wait on Mathews fitness

Pune Warriors have not ruled out playing Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews in the IPL despite the player saying he has a pulled muscle that will take about eight weeks to heal

Tariq Engineer04-Apr-2011Pune Warriors have not ruled out playing Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews in the IPL despite the player saying he has a pulled muscle that will take about eight weeks to heal. The franchise wants to have their team physio evaluate the player’s injury and decide whether or not Mathews can recover in time to play a part in the tournament, Abhijit Sarkar, director of Sahara Adventure Sports Limited, told ESPNcricinfo. The franchise begins its final camp for the tournament on Tuesday at the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai, and Mathews will be examined over the next few days. If it is determined that his injury will not heal in time, then the team will look for a replacement player.Mathews left the field during the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand with a minor quadriceps muscle injury, and his movement was hampered when he came out to bat with a runner. He played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s campaign, as back-up seamer and middle-order batsman, and Sri Lanka missed his all-round skills in the final, which they lost by six wickets. His place in the squad was taken by offspinner Suraj Randiv.A rash of injured players has forced a number of franchises to scrimmage for replacement players. Kings XI Punjab signed Ryan McLaren after losing Stuart Broad and Dimitri Mascarenhas to long-term injuries. Mumbai Indians have also signed a replacement player, snapping up Sri Lanka fast bowler Dilhara Fernando for Australia fast bowler Clint Mckay, while Deccan Chargers have to do without the services of Kevin Pietersen, who is recovering from hernia surgery.Australian allrounder Moises Henriques is the latest addition to the list of injured. “For the Mumbai fans, I’ve just had surgery and won’t be able to take part in this years IPL,” Henriques tweeted. “Very disappointing but I’ll see you next year!”Under IPL rules, the replacements have to be chosen from the pool of players who went unsold in the January auction, and cannot be paid more than the players they are replacing, though they can be paid less, depending on their base price in the auction. This limits the choice of players to those whose base price is equivalent to, or less than, the players being replaced.
