Hampshire release three as Giles White retires

Hampshire Cricket have announced that opening batsman Jason Laney, off-spinner Irfan Shah and seamer James Schofield will not be offered new contracts with the county for 2003

Richard Isaacs20-Sep-2002Hampshire Cricket have announced that opening batsman Jason Laney, off-spinner Irfan Shah and seamer James Schofield will not be offered new contracts with the county for 2003. Alongside the trio, Giles White has announced his retirement from first-class cricket. All four were out of contract at the end of this season and have paid the price for poor seasons, which saw the first XI relegated from Division One of the Frizzell County Championship and end near the foot of the Norwich Union League.Director of Cricket Tim Tremlett spoke of the dedication these players had given to Hampshire. “I would like to thank them for their efforts in aid of the county, both on and off the pitch.”However, we are looking to secure a top-order batsman from overseas, while further strengthening the batting line-up with an English qualified player.”The emergence of players like John Francis and James Adams has made their chances in the first XI limited, and with our hope of signing further batsmen, it would limit their opportunities further.”It ends a long association for both White and Laney, who joined the staff simultaneously in 1994. 30-year-old White ends an 11-year first-class career that started at Somerset, before he joined Hampshire in 1994. His 6195 runs in 128 matches at an average of 30.66 included nine centuries. The other three players are all in the search for new counties. 29-year-old Laney has been generally linked with Gloucestershire for a couple of seasons, and his release from Hampshire may fuel their interest once more.He had become a regular member of the first XI in later months, but his 4414 runs at 29.82 in 87 first-class matches in a career that spanned eight seasons ranks as a poor return for a promising, if unfulfilled opening batsman, who had been tipped for England honours in the early part.Probably more surprising is seamer James Schofield’s sacking after just four first team appearances in his two years on the staff. He will be remembered for taking a wicket with his first ball in both forms of the game, dismissing Matthew Hayden in the memorable Australia match at the Rose Bowl last season, as well as snaring Anurag Singh in a National League match against Warwickshire. His 19 wickets at a shade over 23 apiece were obviously insufficient to merit him a further contract, and with the county keen to attract the services of at least two front-line seamers in the winter, Schofield’s opportunities would have been decidedly more rare.He has already attracted considerable interest from a number of other teams, which he is likely to pursue. With the signing of Shane Warne, Irfan Shah would have been pushed down the pecking order once more, so the 23-year-old Londoner is searching for a new county. Charlie van der Gucht’s return to full fitness and Shaun Udal’s excellent campaign has also hampered the likable Shah’s hopes of gaining a first team call-up.Hampshire would not be drawn on the situation for out of contract overseas player Neil Johnson, only declaring that the decision on their second overseas for next season would be made in due course, but a top-order batsman is thought to be high on the shopping list, a role which Johnson may fill.

Sky reporter shares update after Spurs talks with Fonseca

Speaking live on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), reporter Paul Gilmour has shared what he has been told about Paulo Fonseca and Tottenham Hotspur after the club pulled out of manager talks.

The Lowdown: Spurs still eyeing new manager…

It’s now been two months since former boss Jose Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in what has been a whirlwind chase for new management.

Tottenham have been linked to a host of different managers and, at one point, attempted to bring former boss and current Paris-Saint Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino back to north London (BBC).

After PSG dug their heels in, Spurs turned to ex-Chelsea gaffer Antonio Conte only for those conversations to eventually cease (BBC).

The Latest: Sky Sports reporter shares Fonseca update…

Spurs also looked very likely to appoint Fonseca as their new boss, but in another sensational twist, they decided to pull out of negotiations.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Speculation mounted as to why this was the case, with some believing it was due to financial complications, but Gilmour has now come out with ‘verified’ information on the story.

“We have had that information verified, the information coming from our colleagues in Italy, that indeed those talks with Fonseca have indeed broken down,” he explained on Sky (via Football Daily).

“We’re told it is a decision that Tottenham themselves have taken and we are also told that it is not to do with anything financial in those negotiations.”

The Verdict: Crazy…

Despite arguably not exciting to many supporters as the likes of Conte or Pochettino, Fonseca still had his merits – like style of play and willingness to promote youngsters for instance (Evening Standard).

Time is running out for Spurs to appoint a new boss in good time for the 2021/2022 season and we believe the decision to pull out of yet more advanced discussions comes as truly crazy if it was not due to a financial disagreement – why did discussions get that far if the club weren’t even convinced he was their man?

Lilywhites will be hoping that chairman Daniel Levy, and new managing director Fabio Paratici, have a managerial ace up their sleeve in what is fast becoming a summer of chaos in north London.

Fulham receive offer for Aboubakar Kamara

Fulham have received an offer for troublesome centre-forward Aboubakar Kamara.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (via Football League World), who claim that Greek Super League club Aris Thessaloniki have made a bid worth over £4m for the 26-year-old Fulham striker.

The report does not mention whether chairman Tony Khan has accepted the bid, or indicate whether the Cottagers are open to selling the Mauritania international this summer, although it is stated that Kamara is under contract at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2024, suggesting Fulham are in a strong negotiating position regarding their rarely-seen forward.

Kamara must go

Having joined Fulham from French side Amiens SC in what was a £5.35m move back in 2017, it would seem a fair assessment to make that Kamara has not quite lived up to expectations in west London.

Indeed, having featured a total of 93 times in all competitions for the Cottagers, the 26-year-old has scored just 17 goals and provided six assists for his teammates, with the vast majority of these goal involvements coming in the Championship.

Last season, the £1.8m-rated striker was incredibly disappointing over his 11 Premier League appearances for Scott Parker’s side, scoring no goals, registering no assists and creating no big chances, in addition to mustering an average of just 0.2 shots on target per game and missing one big chance for his side.

These metrics saw Kamara earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.36, ranking him as Fulham’s fifth-worst performer in the top flight of English football, with Parker subsequently allowing the £21k-per-week forward to move on loan Dijon FCO for the second half of the campaign.

His time at Craven Cottage has been regularly been marred by controversy too, emphasising just how bad he’s let the club down for several years.

As per the Daily Mail, there was that infamous penalty incident with teammate Aleksander Mitrovic in December 2018, which led to a fight behind the scenes during training at a later date. He was also arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm at club’s training ground in 2019 and even refused to train before his loan exit in January this year.

As such, considering the miserable returns Kamara has brought Fulham, if the club have indeed received a bid of around £4m for the striker whom Claudio Ranieri once claimed he “wanted to kill,” as well as labelling the 26-year-old’s actions in one game as “unbelievable,” it would appear highly advisable for the club to get rid of the striker as quickly as possible this summer.

Nuno gifted big Kane boost in Tottenham claim

According to a report by the Daily Mail, new Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo has just been handed a big Harry Kane boost ahead of his first full season in charge of the Lilywhites.

The Lowdown: Kane looking for exit…

Tottenham’s star striker has been heavily linked with a move away from north London this summer ever since Sky Sports broke the news that he wishes to move on.

Of all the interested parties, Premier League champions Manchester City have made the first move for him, tabling a £100 million bid.

That offer has since been rejected despite Kane’s wish to exit N17, with chairman Daniel Levy taking a hard line stance when it comes to his superstar asset.

The Latest: Nuno gifted Kane boost…

As per the Mail, Spurs boss Nuno has just been handed a big boost in potentially guiding Tottenham to a successful 2021/2022 campaign, and it involves Kane.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-3/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The outlet believes that Tottenham and Levy have now personally assured Nuno that his best player isn’t going anywhere this summer and to start planning for life with him in the team.

This development highlights Spurs will continue to resist offers for the 27-year-old with Levy apparently making the club’s intentions clear behind the scenes.

The Verdict: Good news for Nuno…

The 47-year-old has a mountainous task on his hands after putting to pen to paper on a two-year Tottenham deal, and that is to restore faith and pride in the club.

Jose Mourinho’s tenure has left a sour taste in the mouth of supporters and Spurs’ hapless search for a new manager, which lasted for over two months, certainly hasn’t helped matters.

Nuno needs all the help he can get with this massive challenge at Tottenham and potentially keeping Kane, who Alan Shearer recently dubbed ‘magnificent’, will boost the Portuguese’ chances of making it a success.

Whelan tips Leeds to make further signings

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has tipped the Whites to make more signings after the deal for left-back Junior Firpo was confirmed.

The Lowdown: Firpo signs

Marcelo Bielsa has already enjoyed a busy start to the summer, with Jack Harrison signing permanently from Manchester City and youngster Amari Miller joining from Birmingham City.

Firpo will now be Leeds’ third signing, too, with the Barcelona defender penning a four-year deal after the clubs agreed to an undisclosed fee (official).

The Latest: Whelan believes more players will join

The hope is that the Whites’ transfer business doesn’t stop there, however, and speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claimed that wouldn’t be the case:

“I expect another couple of signings at least.

“When the Euros comes to an end I think we will see even more business done. Victor Orta will be working on a number of other signings. A lot of negotiating needs to be done.

“When we think about where we need to get to as a football club, the squad needs to be bigger, better and stronger. That is the only way we can break into the European places.

“I expect a couple more signings to come through the door before the end of the window.

“I think there is two key positions that will prioritise now that we’ve got a left-back coming in. We need a quality centre-forward to help Patrick Bamford and another option in the middle of the park.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-7/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Exciting times for Leeds

It is imperative that Leeds kick on after such an impressive first season back in the Premier League, but new signings will likely be needed for that to happen, improving both the starting lineup and squad depth.

This is a hugely exciting time for Bielsa’s side, as they look to potentially finish in the European places next season, or at least match their ninth-place finish in 2020/21.

It is going to be intriguing to see who else Leeds sign in order to take them to the next level, making them even more formidable in the process.

Bond signs for the Bears

Warwickshire County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that New Zealand pace bowling sensation Shane Bond has signed up as overseas player for the Bears in 2003 following his highly successful spell with the club at the end of last season

Warwickshire CCC Media Release06-Dec-2002Warwickshire County Cricket Club are delighted to announce that New Zealand pace bowling sensation Shane Bond has signed up as overseas player for the Bears in 2003 following his highly successful spell with the club at the end of last season. The twenty seven year old right arm fast bowler from Christchurch finally agreed terms to secure his services at Edgbaston for the major part of the summer, and is expected to fly to the UK at the conclusion of New Zealand’s tour to Sri Lanka on May 31st 2003.Bond’s meteoric rise to fame came after making his Test Match debut against Australia at Hobart in 2001 where he demonstrated genuinely quick pace and bounce from a smooth and compact run-up to the wicket.Recently selected by the New Zealand Cricket Board for one of their 20 central contracts Bond also added to his appeal by proving himself to be more than useful with the bat, and an accomplished fielder.Warwickshire were fortunate enough to secure his services to play in August 2002 whilst he was touring with the New Zealand squad in West Indies, and he was quick to join the Bears for their search for trophies last summer during Shaun Pollock’s enforced absence due to international call-up. In a period of only 3 weeks Bond took 12 wickets in County Championship cricket, at an average of 27.50 including best bowling figures of 5 for 64 in his final appearance at Taunton, and demonstrated a flair for English bowling conditions.Commenting on the signing Warwickshire’s Chief Executive, Dennis Amiss said “Shane’s decision to commit to Warwickshire next summer is a great boost to the Club, and we see him playing a vital role in our highly talented and motivated squad next summer”.

Liverpool fans react to Saul Niguez update

A number of Liverpool supporters are excited about the Reds possibly signing Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez this summer following an update on his future.

Jurgen Klopp may be looking for a new central midfielder ahead of next season following the exit of Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain. The Dutchman was a huge player for Liverpool during his five years at the club, so not replacing him could be deemed a risk, given his quality and availability.

One player who could potentially move to Anfield is Saul, who has been a fantastic player for Atletico, scoring 43 goals in 337 appearances for the La Liga champions.

According to Atleti Francia on Twitter [via LFC Transfer Room], Liverpool are going on the ‘offensive’ to sign the midfielder this summer. They are reportedly going to bid €40m (£34.3m) for the Spaniard’s services and Atletico could accept the offer.
